What’s the cost of doing construction
One of the most-asked questions we get is, “How much does it cost to build or renovate a house?”
Setting a budget is one of the most important considerations when starting a renovation or construction project in Toronto or the GTA. The cost of construction varies based on a number of factors. We’ll work with you to understand your needs, budget, and desired results. Here are some things we consider when quoting a project:
The more complicated or intricate a Toronto construction or renovation project is, the more labour-intensive and material-heavy it will be. For example, adding fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, skylights and other features will increase costs. You also need to consider whether your project will require updating plumbing, electrical, or HVAC. Also consider square footage of your project, permits, site preparation and any site clean-up that may be required.
Are you renovating your home, or looking to start a new build from the ground up? The size of your project will influence the amount of your own time you will need to put into your project, be displaced from your home, or live through a renovation.
The least expensive materials aren’t always the best. While we only work with high-quality materials, some simply cost more than others. We know how to find the right materials for your budget, without compromising quality or longevity. At the beginning of our design process, we will work with you to understand your vision and your goals, and we’ll also ensure you approve all materials and finishings along the way so there are no surprises.

Book a consultation
Want to get your next construction project started? Whether you’re looking to renovate, build an addition, create an outdoor oasis, or build a brand new custom home, we’d love to help. Book a consultation with us and tell us your vision, and we’ll help turn it into a reality.
Step 1: Consultation
We start every project with an in-depth project review so that we can put together a comprehensive, individualized plan. In this meeting, we discuss your vision, goals, expectations, project timeline and budget. Here, you can provide us with your overall wishlist and prioritize the items as “must-haves” or “nice-to-haves”. From here, we activate the project development agreement and begin the design drawings.
Step 2: Assign a Design Team
In this phase, we create and confirm your vision. Based on your project scope and requirements, we will assign you a dedicated design team to your project. You’ll get a link to their profile and see examples of their design work. You will also be assigned a project coordinator who will guide you through the project. At this stage, we determine appropriate zoning requirements and restrictions as well.
Step 3: Drawing Review
Here, we share design ideas and review your project’s preliminary drawings. We receive feedback and approval from the client, and work with you on desired changes to the overall design. 3D drawing can be provided if desired. We also take this time to discuss the budget and provide a rough project quote.
Step 4: Establish Project Details
Next, we start costing with key trade partners, finalize drawings, material selection, and the general budget. You can choose to join us for material selection or have us bring samples to you. We then conduct a home walkthrough and plan review. We also discuss areas for potential unforeseen problems and develop contingency plans as-needed.
Step 5: Building Phase and Milestones
During the course of the building and construction phase, we set up regular contact and weekly communication meetings, and set up a dedicated chat for progress updates, client questions and decision resolution. We also discuss the steps we’re taking to meet your budget, work quality and schedule.
Step 6: Home Sweet Home!
The moment you’ve been waiting for! In this final phase of the project, we do our final walkthrough and reveal, and explain how everything works, as needed. We follow this with a 30 day check in and one year check in, but in between those times, we’re always just a phone call away.
Trust, transparency, quality
At Sandstorm Construction, it’s our goal to provide our customers with the highest quality service, not only in the work we produce, but in all areas of our business. We’re here to guide you through each phase of your project – even before you’ve spent a dime. From planning and design, to communication and transparency throughout your project, to responding to issues, questions and concerns in a timely fashion, you’ll never feel like you’re in the dark. And in the end, you’ll be left with high-quality results that we know you’ll love.
The cost of a custom home build or home renovation project in Toronto and the GTA can vary, and depends on factors including the size and complexity of the project, the materials and finishes selected, and the location. We will work with you to provide a detailed estimate based on your vision, specific needs and requirements.
That said, the cost to build a house in Toronto and the GTA can range from $100,000 to several million dollars, depending on these factors. On average, it costs between $200,000 and $400,000 to build a single-family home.
We will work with you to establish your vision, the materials and finishes you want to use, and your desired timeline. From there, we will help you develop a detailed plan and budget.
The completion of a home renovation or custom home build can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, and availability of materials and labor. On average, a home renovation can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, while a custom home build can take several months to a year or more.
Finding a contractor can be overwhelming! To find the best home renovation contractor near you, start by asking for recommendations from friends and family. You can look online for contractors in your area and read reviews. When choosing a contractor, check that they have the necessary licenses, insurance, and references, and book a consultation to discuss your project.
The steps involved in the construction process can vary depending on the project, but usually include the following:
- Conceptualization and planning: This involves defining the scope of the project, creating a design and layout, and developing a budget and timeline.
- Permits and approvals
- Site preparation: This involves preparing the site for construction, including excavation, grading, and utility installations.
- Foundation work: This involves pouring the foundation and any necessary retaining walls.
- Framing: This involves building the walls, roof, and flooring.
- Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work: This involves installing the heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Finishing work: This involves adding the interior and exterior finishes, including drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and paint.
- Final inspection: This involves conducting a final inspection to ensure that all work has been completed to the required standards and that the building is ready for occupancy.
- Home sweet home! Occupancy happens once all work has been completed and all necessary permits and approvals have been obtained.
